BOUNTY HUNTER

Just doodling. This sketch is based on a television series that aired in the early 1960's. It was titled WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE and starred Steve McQueen. He played a character named Josh Randall, who was a bounty hunter in the old west. It was the first major role for Steve McQueen.

CAPTAIN CALLAHAN

Just doodling. This is a rendering of my great great grandfather, Captain James Hughes Callahan. He was an early Texas Ranger and a notable figure in history. No photographs of him have been found and we do not know what he looked like in real life. The sketches of him posted here are based on my imagination.

FENCE BUILDING

Just doodling. There is much more to being a cowboy than riding horses and herding cows. They had to do all of the chores that were necessary to keep a ranch running. One of the worst tasks for them was keeping the fences mended or putting in new fences.

WINDMILL WOES

Just doodling. Keeping the windmills spinning and pumping good water was another big challenge for the ranchers and cowboys. Making sure the livestock had water to drink was a constant concern. When a windmill broke down, it was always a big emergency and getting it back in operation was a high priority. Working on the windmills was a task most of the cowboys hated to do but it had to be done.

CAVALRY ON PATROL

Just doodling. Before the middle 1880's - the only whites entering the Comancheria without permission from the Comanches were the Texas Rangers and U.S. Army Cavalry patrols. The Comanches hated their intrusions into their territory and shadowed them closely. They often staged raids in the middle of the night to steal horses.
